NAWA, Syrien (AP) – Als Aufständische Ende letzten Jahres in einer Überraschungsoffensive im Nordwesten des Landes quer durch Syrien zogen, trafen sich Beamte mehrerer Länder, die entweder die Rebellen oder die syrische Regierung unterstützten, in Katar, um zu besprechen, was zu tun sei.
Nach Angaben von Personen, die über das Treffen am 7. Dezember informiert wurden, waren sich Beamte aus der Türkei, Russland, dem Iran und einer Handvoll arabischer Länder einig, dass die Aufständischen ihren Vormarsch in Homs, der letzten Großstadt nördlich von Damaskus, stoppen und international vermittelte Gespräche aufnehmen würden Platz mit dem syrischen Führer Baschar al-Assad bei einem politischen Übergang.
