– The Brotherhood gas pipeline will no longer be supplied with Russian gas.

An announcement with serious consequences. Ukraine announced it would end to the transit of Russian gas through its territory, Wednesday December 31. Volodymyr Zelensky has decided that he will not renew the contract he signed in 2019, before the start of the conflict with Moscow, reports The Dispatch. This transit was carried out via the Brotherhood gas pipeline, which extended over 4,500 kilometersbetween Urengoy in Russia and Uzhhorod, in Ukraine.

This breakdown of the agreement should represent a great loss for the Russian economy, which will have to ignore on 6.5 billion dollars per yearbut also for kyiv which loses several hundred million dollars. And this closure will directly impact European countries, and in particular those in Eastern Europe, such as Hungary, Austria, Slovenia and even Slovakia, which obtains 65% of its supplies from the Ukrainian gas pipeline network. The European Union will not be impacted that 5% of its importspoints to the newspaper.

Europe limits the damage

The European Commission has already planned to be autonomous from Russian gas by 2027and is intensifying its imports from other countries, such as Norway and the United States. While before the start of the war, Europe brought 40% of its gas from Russia, this share is now reduced to 8%. The consequences on the price of gas in should therefore be limited, even if the megawatt hour has already crossed the 50 euro markspecify our colleagues. With this announcement, the price, which has already been high since the start of the conflict, is not likely to come down.
